The Curricular Unit (CU) The 100 Years’ War: Portugal and Europe is a free elective that complements the other subjects offered in the Master’s degree program in Medieval History specialization by FCSH and IEM. This course is mainly related to the topics covered in the required courses: Medieval History of Portugal and Medieval History of Europe.

The main objectives of this CU are:

  • Assimilate the main events of the 100 Years’ War, placing them in their various contexts (political, diplomatic, economic, social and military);
  • Explore and understand the confict’s regional ramifications, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula and Portugal in particular;
  • Understand Portugal’s involvement in the conflict;
  • Understand the (variable) position of the Portuguese kingdom in the context of Iberian and European powers;
  • Understand the long-term consequences of the conflict on subsequent relations between players and transformations in the political, economic, social and cultural spheres;
  • Understand the lines of continuity and rupture throughout the period and the underlying historical patterns;
  • Develop a critical view of the role of external circumstances and relations on the internal life of the kingdom;
  • Analyse and mobilise primary texts and selected secondary bibliography from a critical perspective;
  • Develop teamwork skills.

In the 1st semester this UC will be available to FCSH students on all 2nd Cycle (Master’s) courses, with an accreditation of 10 ECTS. The workload is 3 (three) hours in a single weekly session.
