In England in the 13th and 14th centuries, the production of illuminated apocalypses multiplied. This type of codex, accompanied by great cycles of illustrations, represented an unquestionable qualitative leap regarding the stylistic and iconographic possibilities of medieval apocalyptic imagery. Today, these manuscripts are scattered in libraries and collections all over the world. One of them, known as the “Gulbenkian Apocalypse,” is part of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian’s collection of Western illuminated manuscripts and will be analyzed in this session.
This session takes place as part of the cycle of seminars «Tesouros em Pergaminho – A coleção de manuscritos iluminados ocidentais de Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian» (Treasures in Parchment – The Western Illuminated Manuscript Collection of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian), the result of a partnership between Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and the Institute of Medieval Studies (IEM) of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities, NOVA University (NOVA FCSH).
