Durante séculos, o património construído religioso tem desempenhado um papel essencial na formação de valores sociais, económicos, ambientais e culturais. Grutas, implantações eremíticas, capelas, mosteiros, conventos, igrejas e catedrais dialogaram com a sua envolvente, seja em locais montanhosos ou solitários, vales férteis, centros periféricos ou urbanos. Hoje em dia, a memória destes lugares tende a ser apagada. A secularização de muitos conventos, igrejas ou mosteiros, bem como o abandono ou o escasso uso de outros, levaram à perda de uma série de valores materiais. Estes edifícios e paisagens específicos necessitam, portanto, de ser repensados à luz dos desafios contemporâneos.

A 4ª Conferência Internacional "Architectures of the Soul. Religious Heritage: understanding the past, shaping the future" visa promover o estudo científico e a discussão em torno da arquitetura e da paisagem ligada às práticas religiosas e espirituais, com base em experiências de reclusão e solidão.

O evento será acolhido, entre 19 e 21 de Outubro de 2023, pelo Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória (município de Batalha, Portugal), reconhecido como Património Mundial da UNESCO em 1983, há exatamente 40 anos.

A conferência está estruturada em torno de dois temas principais, de modo a compreender os valores históricos e atuais destes lugares e como podem moldar o futuro:

1. História da experiência religiosa;

2. O futuro do património religioso.

For centuries, religious built heritage has played an essential role in shaping social, economic, environmental and cultural values. Caves, eremitical settlements, chapels, monasteries, convents, churches and cathedrals have dialogued with their surroundings, be them mountainous or solitary places, fertile valleys, peripheral or urban centres. Nowadays, the memory of these places tends to be erased. The secularisation of many convents, churches or monasteries, as well as the abandonment or low usage of others, led to the loss of material values. These specific buildings and landscapes need to be rethought at the light of the contemporary challenges.

The 4th International Conference "Architectures of the Soul. Religious Heritage: understanding the past, shaping the future" aims at promoting the scientific study and discussion around the architecture and landscape connected to religious and spiritual practices, grounded on the experience of seclusion and solitude.

The conference will be hosted, between 19th and 21st of October 2023, by the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória (municipality of Batalha, Portugal), recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, exactly 40 years ago.

This is structured around two main topics, in order to understand the historical and current values of these places and how they can shape the future:

1. History of religious experience;

2. Future for religious heritage.
