During the months of April and May (7 April to 8 May), Professor Tommaso di Carpegna Falconieri will be a visiting researcher at the Institute for Medieval Studies.
Prof. Falconieri holds a PhD in Medieval History from the Catholic University of Milan. Since 1998, he has been a professor at the University of Urbino, where he currently serves as Full Professor of Medieval History. His main research interests include the history of Rome, the Roman Church, and Central Italy in the Middle Ages, with a particular focus on historical sources and the relationship between historical fact and its representation in the imagination. More recently, his work has also focused on representations of the Middle Ages after the Middle Ages, the so-called “medievalisms.” On this topic, he published the book Medioevo militante (Einaudi), also translated into Spanish (El presente medieval, Icaria), French (Médiéval et militante, Publications de la Sorbonne), and English (The Militant Middle Ages, Brill). His most recent publications include: Nel labirinto del passato. 10 modi di riscrivere la storia (Laterza, 2020); Cola di Rienzo (Salerno Editrice, 2024); La Storia al contrario (Salerno editrice, 2025).
During his stay in Lisbon, Prof. Falconieri will deliver an Open Lecture aimed at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as anyone interested in the Middle Ages and its reception in later periods. The lecture, entitled “Medievalism as Method: Reframing the Discipline of Medieval Studies”, will take place on Wednesday, 6 May, at 18:00, in a hybrid format (in person at NOVA FCSH and online).
