Publication of Libros, rituales y espacio(s): monjas cistercienses en la península ibérica (siglos XII–XVII)
The project Books, Rituals and Space in a Cistercian Nunnery: Living, Praying and Reading in Lorvão (13th–16th centuries) has recently published, in the journal Hispania Sacra, a special issue entitled Libros, rituales y espacio(s): monjas cistercienses en la península ibérica (siglos XII–XVII). Edited by Luís Miguel Rêpas and Catarina Fernandes Barreira, this volume brings together eight studies on the presence of Cistercian nuns in the Iberian Peninsula, with a particular focus on the Monastery of Lorvão.
The articles reflect the results of recent or ongoing research, contributing to the renewal of Iberian Cistercian historiography, as well as to the advancement of gender studies, with a particular emphasis on female agency in monastic contexts. Covering different kingdoms—Portugal, León, Castile, and Aragon—the volume proposes a comparative perspective and an interdisciplinary approach, integrating fields such as history, art history, liturgy, archival studies, codicology, and heraldry.
This dossier thus represents a significant contribution to a deeper understanding of female monasticism in the Iberian Peninsula, while also promoting new lines of research and the development of renewed problematics within Cistercian studies.
