Rui Venâncio has been a senior technician at the Municipality of Peniche since 2006. As part of his professional activity, he develops initiatives in the fields of cultural programming, as well as the safeguarding and promotion of the municipality’s cultural heritage.

He holds a degree in History, specialising in Archaeology, from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (1999), and a Master’s degree in Cultural Management from the School of Arts and Design of Caldas da Rainha – Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (2013). Since 2024, he has been a PhD candidate in Medieval Studies at NOVA FCSH. Within the framework of this programme, he is developing the research project entitled “The Franks in the Expansion and Territorial Defence of the Kingdom of Portugal: Belligerence, Migration, and Settlement in Estremadura during the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries.

In parallel, he conducts research on medieval whaling along the Portuguese coast, collaborating with the project ERC Synergy Grant 4-OCEANS: Human History of Marine Life , funded by the European Research Council. The project is carried out by a consortium bringing together CHAM – Centre for the Humanities, Trinity College Dublin, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
