Alicia Hernández Robles

My research integrates archaeology, history, and digital humanities to analyse the economic, social, and cultural dynamics of al-Andalus and the medieval Mediterranean. Focusing on urbanism, trade, and transcultural networks (particularly market places and Italian merchants), my work connects cities, rural landscapes, and production systems. My PhD in Medieval History and Archaeology (UMU, 2022)—funded by an FPU-MECD fellowship, awarded Cum Laude, International Mention, and the Extraordinary Doctoral Prize (2023)—produced the first comprehensive historical-archaeological study of the funduq in al-Andalus, combining material culture, spatial analysis, and documentary sources. My postdoctoral trajectory includes a Juan de la Cierva fellowship at the University of Granada (2024-2025) and an upcoming integration at the Instituto the Estudos Medievais of the University Nova of Lisbon (2026-2028) funded by a European MSCA ERA Fellowship, expanding my research approach to Islamic rural and peri-urban economic landscapes.

I have strong international experience, supported by 9 competitive mobility and conference grants, with research stays at the Universities of Exeter, Nova of Lisbon, and CIHAM-UMR 5648 CNRS of Lyon. I have participated in 9 competitive research projects (international, national, and regional), driving technological innovation through archaeometric, bioarchaeological, and digital documentation workflows. Furthermore, I have participated as researcher in 18 contracts with public institutions, co-directing 3 excavations and working as a technician in Spain, Italy, and Bahrain.

My scientific output comprises 25 publications, 17 invited lectures, and 32 peer-reviewed international conference presentations. I also serve as an editorial board member and peer reviewer for high-impact journals. I have directed an international conference, organised 4 courses, 5 thematic sessions in congresses, and served on 10 organising and scientific committees. My commitment to teaching and transfer includes 7 years of university lecturing in Spain and Portugal, thesis supervision, and extensive public outreach across mass media.
