The documentary exhibition “Mostra Documental “Forais Medievais Portugueses ao longo da História: do pergaminho à era digital” (“Portuguese Medieval Charters Through History: From Parchment to the Digital Age”) aims to showcase how the oldest royal charters granted to Portuguese communities have survived to the present day, continuing to spark interest and fascination among the people. From their initial granting by the king in the 12th and 13th centuries to the copies, rewritings, and translations they underwent over time, these documents have been published in print—and are now, for the first time, being made available in an open-access digital edition.

This exhibition is part of the iForal Project: Portuguese Medieval Charters—A Historical and Linguistic Perspective in the Digital Age, and is organized by the Torre do Tombo National Archive and the Centre for History at the University of Lisbon, in collaboration with other national research centers.

Dates: May 7, 2025 to June 17, 2025
Location: National Archive of Torre do Tombo
Organizing Committee: Filipa Roldão, Joana Serafim, Maria João Branco and Adelaide Millán da Costa.
