On May 7th at 4:30 PM, the documentary exhibition “Portuguese Medieval Charters Through History: From Parchment to the Digital Age” will be inaugurated at the National Archive Torre do Tombo. This exhibition aims to showcase how the oldest royal charters, granted to Portuguese communities, have survived to the present day, sparking interest and fascination among the people. From their initial issuance by kings in the 12th and 13th centuries to the copies, rewritings, and translations they underwent, these documents were later published on paper and are now being digitally released for the first time in open access.

This exhibition is part of the iForal project – Portuguese Medieval Charters: A Historical and Linguistic Perspective in the Digital Age and is organized by the National Archive Torre do Tombo and the Centre for History at the University of Lisbon, in collaboration with other national research centers. The exhibition will be open to the public until June 17, 2025.
