IEM integrated researcher and invited lecturer at Coimbra University, Tiago Viúla de Faria is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Medieval Academy of America’s Belle da Costa Greene Award. The prize is awarded annually to support an outstanding untenured scholar.
Previous Belle da Costa Greene Award winners have worked on topics such as the medieval textile trade, hagiography and race, and indigeneity in medieval studies. A librarian, Belle was the first director of the Pierpont Morgan and a champion of public access to cultural treasures, among which medieval manuscripts. Born to Black parents, her career remains a powerful symbol of resilience in a segregated society.
Tiago Viúla de Faria’s award will help fund his ongoing research on falconry practices and the natural environment. The da Costa Greene builds on a previous accolade: he also received a Centennial Bursary last year, which saw FALCO, a project he leads, selected for plenary presentation at the MAA’s Centennial Conference at Harvard University as a breakthrough model project.
